Questionable existence

Although there are many online genealogies that list Suana de Montfort, as the wife of Bruno, and mother of Liudolf, the founder of the Liudolfing dynasty, there is no primary sources for either her first name or family name, or any variations (see below). Even any reliable secondary sources for her seem to be non-existent.

See for instance the Medieval Lands database[1] and The Henry Project database[2] which both name Bruno as possibly the father of Liudolf, but indicate that the name of his mother is unknown.

Thus it seems certain that she is fictitious and not an historical identity. (The details given below are just an indication of how she appears in many genealogies)

Alternative Names

Suana de Montfort is the most common name used, but her first name is sometimes given as Sabana, Susanna, Sauna or Oda/Ode or Gisla. Her birth name seems to almost consistently be de Montfort or of Montfort, and sometimes she is listed as Countess or Duchess of Montfort. However D'Angrie is also listed as a surname and Harcourt or de Harcourt or leDanois Harcourt or Hoxter or von Verla. Her 'married name' varies between Saxony, Sachsen or vonengern.

Birth and Death

Her birth date varies from about 774, 785, 790 and 804, and sometimes her birthplace is Montfort Sur Risle, Eure, Normandy, but the date she died seems to always be 835.

Parents

Hugh de Montfort is often listed as her father, but also Widukind, Duke of the Saxons and Svatana of the Saxons on at least one occasion

Verla-1 and De Montfort-22 appear to represent the same person because: Both of these wives of Bruno seem to be fictitious, with no primary or good secondary sources giving the name of Bruno's wife and Liudolf's mother. Various online genealogies give both names or use Gisla/Suana as alternative names. Both share a similar birth date, and the same death date. The biography of Gisla Verla, mentions Suana as an alternative name. Suana and De Montfort is probably the preferred name (it appears more often in the online genealogies).
